TRIBUNE: "2nd District (West, Near South and Near North sides): Attorney Desiree Grode is a professional violinist and daughter of Holocaust survivors. She would streamline the government and protect the forest preserves. The Tribune endorses Grode over incumbent Robert Steele, who at times has bucked Stroger but usually votes as Stroger and county labor unions ask".

 

SUN-TIMES: "2nd District (Near North, West and Near South sides): Professional violinist and lawyer Desiree Grode is a thoughtful alternative to incumbent Robert B. Steele, who supported the 1 percentage point county sales tax increase."

 

My platform is to lower the sales tax, collect over $100 million in outstanding bills due the county hospital, merge county offices into fewer entities, and post all  county revenues, expenditures, bids and  job openings online.

Per the Chicago Sun-Times (9/14/09) my pro-Stroger opponent Robert Steele said: “[he] stood by Todd [Stroger] on everything".

 

"Like mother, like son...Robert Steele replaced his mother... as Cook County commissioner" (Chicago Sun-Times 12/6/06)..."amid cries of nepotism and robbing 2nd District voters of the opportunity to choose her successor". (Chicago Defender 12/6/06).  

 

"[T]he brother of Commissioner Robert Steele, .... [received a Cook County patronage job in 11/09 earning] ... a little less than $90,000 a year, [filling] a position that has been vacant for six years, [Stroger spokesman Eugene] Mullins said."  (Chicago Tribune 11/13/09) 

Per the Chicago Tribune (6/21/09): "We've been writing a lot about how to eradicate the culture of corruption in this state...That means recruiting candidates right now ... for the Cook County Board, for every office on the ballot in 2010."

 

My pro-Stroger opponent voted to increase the Cook County sales tax making Chicago the highest sales taxed city in the USA – an exorbitant 10.25% sales tax. This is hurting the Chicago economy, is leaving our residents less access to competitively priced goods, caused many job losses, and is a very great burden on the poor.

 

My pro-Stroger opponent consistently votes for unnecessary borrowing.  

 

My pro-Stroger opponent says his constituents don't have computers so he doesn't receive emails to lower the sales tax.

 

I am first on the ballot, #111, the only woman candidate, and the only serious reform candidate.

High voter turnout is essential to reform government.

 

The 2nd District includes most of the Loop, the Near North Side, the South Loop, a section along the Eisenhower to Cicero, and a sliver which connects to Washington Park. (See Map). 

        

Our county government is a wasteful patronage-infested bureaucracy which hurts residents and businesses. I am ready to take on the responsibility to streamline county government and to be a leading advocate for positive change in Cook County.
